We finished last quarter sharing WORD ART book projects and MIND MAP projects, the creative culmination to our completion of To Kill a Mockingbird.
Last month, we were totally immersed in poetry! We read poetry from many genres, identified poetic elements in song lyrics, and even learned the connection between Shakespeare and hip hop music! Many were surprised to learn that "O, Captain, My Captain" was not really about a ship and its captain. I was impressed with what the students wrote, even if they weren't impressed with themselves. Poetry is so personal, but there are techniques that add to the delight of a good poem, and hopefully, some of those were learned. The students did seem to enjoy our Poetry Cafe. We "ate up" alliteration, metaphor and iambs (of iambic pentameter fame) and then enjoyed some good old fashioned riddles in rhyme (Poetry Cafe menu- pictured below). We also played Poetry Jeopardy to review for our exam.
